We’re 191!

Sweden does the most of any country to tackle greenhouse gas emissions, while Canada and Saudi Arabia do the least, according to a barometer published by watchdogs at the UN climate talks last week in Poland. Interestingly, the annual Climate Change Performance Index (CPI) only placed Sweden fourth on its list — leaving the top three slots empty. The CPI, compiled by Germanwatch and Climate Action Network, is suggesting that no nation is leading the way to a low-carbon economy, so dangerous climate change is almost a foregone conclusion — especially given the pessimism surrounding the Poznan climate talks.

Germany, France, India, Brazil, Britain and Denmark follow Sweden in the CPI, while the world’s worst GHG villains are, in descending order, Greece, Malaysia, Cyprus, Russia, Australia, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, the United States, Canada and Saudi Arabia.

Of course, the good news is that that United States — under President Barack Obama — will start moving upward almost as soon as he takes office. And Canada has a new best friend in Saudi Arabia.
