Hey Cheryl...

I've been wondering how you're holding up!

I plan to write more about hurricanes soon. In a nutshell, the science is so strong that global warming will lead or more — and stronger — hurricanes that it's a wonder that anyone would debate it.

The problem is that several studies have appeared in the literature that suggested that hurricanes have a cyclical nature, and seemed to wax and wane over a 70-year cycle (since we have records going back a few hundred years). It was a point of contention until other scientists discovered a false coincidence that gave this erroneous result... That the years with fewer hurricane also corresponded to years after major volcanic eruptions (and a few other events) that reduced temperatures around the world. So the research on hurricane cycles actually proves the theory that hotter weather makes for more hurricanes... But some deniers (and some scientists) still haven't got the memo.

I too get very frustrated working with a bunch of people that refuse to believe all of the hurricanes we have been getting are due to global warming. We live near Tampa and the thought of a hurricane like Katrina terrifies me. The models of Pinellas County show that almost our entire county would be under water in a Cat 4 hurricane. My sister in law and her husband lived in New Orleans during Katrina, and had to move as a result, since the hospital they worked at closed. I get very frustrated that governments are not acting quickly enough. I know Obama is committed to helping, but I feel Congress is not cooperating. Everyone in Washington needs to stop bickering and get something done, now.
